Refective Analysis
The Creature of the Lake is a short CGI film presented by CGMeetup, a YouTube Platform. CGMeetup features a wide range of CGI content including short animated films, showreels, behind-the-scenes and VFX breakdowns. CGMeetup is a source network that provides jobs for CGI professionals as well as allowing them to spread their ideas, and knowledge of a good narrative and to be able to express themselves through their works of CGI animation.
Co-produced by none other than ISART Digital. It is a 5-minute, 9-second short Comedic, family/thriller film featuring a monster hunter called ‘Jack’ with his camera woman who suffers from asthma working with the ‘Jack vs Monsters’ franchise. Facing a dangerous lake monster who tragically eats Jack alive and gets blown up, James Bond is styled by the Cowardly Camera woman. “In the 80s, a manly and experienced monster hunter hero of a low-budget TV show, followed by his fat cowardly camerawoman go to a remote lake on the night of a full moon, when mysterious
disappearances tend to occur.”

The 1000-word Reflection Analysis reflects on group 12’s ‘Creature from the Lake’ presentation and its use of Cinematographic, iconographic, semiotic, character and environmental design techniques. We also discussed the hero’s journey aspect and how it’s commonly known for its diverse story structure by how ‘The creature from the Lake’ does not follow the 12-point structure of a Hero’s journey. It instead leads to a short, pointed structured narrative than the usual hero’s journey narrative.
For example, the Hero’s Journey first starts with an Ordinary World as Jack and Shelby go out to film for their show ‘Jack vs the Monsters’ on a remote lake which is aired every Tuesday on DudesChannel.
Both Jack and Shelby are working partners but Jack is a strong, conceited adventurer who doesn’t see Shelby as a person that should be respected e.g. Pushing Shelby to where she falls into the lake, disgusted by her appearance and value.
On the other hand, this also represents a call to adventure as both Shelby and Jack try to hunt and capture a lake monster whilst they explore their surroundings. Turning to the refusal of the call the hero refuses to journey across due to their fears and insecurities that approach from the call to adventure aspect. “The Hero is not willing to make changes, preferring the haven of the Ordinary World.” (Lincoln School, HeroArc PDF, Page 8, c.a.) This means the character tries to go back to its usual rather than face its problems.
The approach of which Shelby faces the Lake master after sighting her crew member being eaten by the Lake Monster, using her inhaler and her accidental tactics to fight the monster substantially. This leads to the resurrection where she defeats the Lake monster by blowing it up, James Bond style.
For Group 12’s presentation, we made 4 separate slots of different subjects and my subject was to talk about the Creature of the Lake’s iconic analysis. It’s metaphorical structure and its use of semiotics which we demonstrated throughout the presentation.
The start of the story uses an establishing shot and showcases a boat in a foggy lake. Fog represents the boundary between illusion and reality. This demonstrates a feeling of “entrapment between the real world and the imaginary because it’s unclear what it brings to you. It also represents uncertainty, mystery, obscurity, confusion, and even dreams” (SympolismandMetaphor.com, 16/01/21)
