This week we learned about different parts of Cinematography and art directions. The first topic we learned in class was about the use of lighting.
“Film lighting refers to the direction, quality, source, or colour of light. These elements work together to guide our attention, create texture or visual impact, and create an atmosphere. The direction of light refers to the path where the light source comes from and where it lands.” (Matrix Education, ca.2023)
The different types of global illumination such as ambient lighting, and natural lighting are the orientation of the sun and moon. Lighting creates mood e.g. cold nights or warm daylight. It also creates an atmosphere for example high key lighting gives a bright, naturalistic and low shadow frequency. Low-key lighting however emphasises harsh shadows and promotes darkness. We also learned about different types of three-point lighting such as Key Light, Rim Light, Fill Light and Bounce Light.
In class, we learned about the 180-degree rule, the basic framing of each dynamic angle/movement, and some Mise-en-scene elements and Colour Theory.
My thoughts about this subject were intrigued by the use of illustrative props, iconography and different colour schemes that promote an emotional response.
