Week 1 – The World of Animation – Discovering Artistic Intent and Emotive Language

My Reflection

This week we learned about story structure, film analysis, artistic intent, and emotive language including some parts of moving image art. There are different aspects to story structures and film analysis which can seem a bit confusing but here are some examples:

No. 1 – The Lord of the Rings – Character aspects including the Story’s structure

The start of the story presents the Hero, Frodo who then meets Ally, Samwise and his  Mentor, the Shadow; Sauron, Threshold Guardian; the Grim Reaper, Herald; the ring, Trickster; Boromir and the Shapeshifter; Gollum. These character parts best describe the story’s routine and how it plays out.

No. 2 – George L Thomas’s Story Structure

This example best describes most story structures and what way they start; exposition and mostly end with; resolution. However, this type of structure may be used a lot in films/series but it’s not always the case as some film directors have various ways to portray a story so these aspects don’t count as there are about “a hundred gazillion ways to structure a story and, as I found out, they can vary quite considerably in complexity.” This means that not all story structures are going to be the same and can be complex depending on how the director tells the story.

After discussing some parts of the Linear and Non-Linear story structures and Narratives, we were introduced to the artistic intent of film language and the emotive language from various film sequences. For this, we were introduced to images/sequences that best describe fear, tension and change through the use of visuals; camera shots, mise-en-scene, style; expressionism, and sound design whether diegetic or non-diegetic.

At the end of this semester, I found it quite helpful to know the different elements of film language and narrative structures as it helps me to make a story. Letting me be creative, and express emotion and description through visuals and auditory motifs.
