Week 11 – 3D Digital Literacy – Posing the Character and exporting to Sketchfab

This week, we learned the basics of armatures and the works of Sketchfab. “An armature in Blender can be thought of as similar to the armature of a real skeleton, and just like a real skeleton an armature can consist of many bones. These bones can be moved around and anything that they are attached to or associated with will move and deform similarly.” Ref: https://docs.blender.org/manual

Sketchfab is a “ 3D modelling platform website to publish, share, discover, buy and sell 3D, VR and AR content. It provides a viewer based on the WebGL and WebXR technologies that allow users to display 3D models on the web, to be viewed on any mobile browser, desktop browser or Virtual Reality headset.” Ref: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sketchfab

An armature has similar bones which are applied on a mesh. In the exporting process, you need to make sure the model you have to export has its UV maps applied and its scale otherwise this process won’t work if you’ve applied coloured textures to your character. After that, you export the model as an FBX and apply it through the Sketchfab software. After I upload the model I add the character’s UV maps and the texture maps.

What I love about this class’ task is the posing a character process where I guide the alien’s body part to create the pose.

For this week’s assignment, however, I have to make my model and present the mesh through Sketchfab. I made sure this model had good typology, mapping, sculpting and forming.

These are the samples as I made sure the polygons don’t exceed over 50000. The problem I had with this model however was that the armatures wouldn’t work on the model itself. Making it difficult for me to pose the model as I had left it in its original form, in a T Pose same as my final model due to the mesh itself.
