Week 7 – 3D Digital Literacy – Character Designs

Self Reflection

For this week’s assignment for 3D Digital Literacy, we had to create character designs for Assignment 2. For the designing stage, we have to relate it to Gennedy Tartakovsky’s signature styles and input his work into our art pieces.

Gennedy Tartakovsky is a Russian-American, artist, animator, illustrator, producer, director and writer. He is infamously known for creating films and TV shows such as Hotel Transylvania, Power Puff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Sym-Bionic Titan and many more.

“Tartakovsky’s art style is extremely distinctive, with highly exaggerated anatomy and stylised characters composed of sharp, angular silhouettes and thick, blocky shapes.” Ref: https://tvtropes.org/

Genndy Tarkovsky has created ‘leadership that helped to shape the direction and the rise to national prominence of the Cartoon Network, where he developed four hit animated series between 1994 and 2010’ Ref: www.sonypicturesanimation.com

I love his art style and the series that he made, especially Samurai Jack as it’s an all-time favourite of mine. I have watched this series ever since. My inspiration for the character designs is Ashi from Samurai Jack of course and one of Gennedy’s Comic Books, Cage, a favourite of mine which I love as he creates beautiful women with glamourous bodies.

Even though this is seen to be a stereotypical representation of women by giving a seductive sexualized perspective e.g. huge cleavage and wide hips, it still influences me to this day as I enjoy looking at the women’s exaggerated structures.

This is the reference I used as well as my creations.
