Week 5 – Animation Studio – Character

27/10/2023

Self-Reflection

This week is about making a character in Animation. A character ‘is a specialised component of the animation process in which animators bring still character designs to life through expressive movements and relatable personalities, providing viewers with memorable viewing experiences.’ Ref: What is Character Animation and Why is it Great for Business? | Kartoffel Films – Video Production Company London

For the first exercise, we had to create a character reference sheet by choosing a character you designed, focusing on one aspect of a character. I did facial expressions but you can also do drawing guidelines, outfit designs, hand expressions or postures. My character has limited emotions as ‘Mushroom Baby’ can only feel anger, surprise, vanilla, sadness, fright or happiness like any other individual would. I chose these emotions specifically as these are the main facial expressions.

For exercise 2 I had to make ¾ profile view. This is a sample of a reference I used.

For exercise 3,  every group had to line up the front poses of each character and collate them into one document therefore my team, team 7 decided to line each character and give insight about the character’s height within the final world lineup.

After all of that, Week 5 teams all together had to talk about the developments, updates on the world, the challenges of the week as well as the experience of swapping from groups.

These are the samples of work I did for Exercises 1, 2, and 3…
