Ireland’s UNESCO Chairs Welcome Publication of Childrens Rights Referendum Wording

Ireland’s two UNESCO Chairs, Professor Pat Dolan of the National University of Ireland, Galway and Professor Alan Smith at the University of Ulster, have welcomed today’s publication of the wording of the children’s rights amendment to the constitution and the confirmation that the referendum will take place on Saturday 10th November 2012. CYP Welcomes Minister to Children’s Rights Event in Galway

On 10th May the UNESCO Child and Family Research Centre at the National University of Ireland, Galway, hosted an event addressing the child protection in Ireland. Ireland’s two UNESCO Chairs, Professor Pat Dolan and Professor Alan Smith welcomed a key note address: ‘A New Era in Child Protection’, delivered by Frances Fitzgerald, TD and Minister for Children and Youth Affairs. Irelands UNESCO Chairs Welcome Referendum Commitment

The Children and Youth Programme welcomes the commitment given by Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore earlier today that there will be a standalone referendum on Children’s Rights in the Constitution this autumn. Writing recently in the Irish Times, Ireland’s two UNESCO Chairs, Professor Alan Smith at the University of Ulster, and Professor Pat Dolan of the National University of Ireland, Galway, commented on the positive benefits a positive referendum endorsement would give. Minister Addresses CYP Childrens Rights Event

On 10th May the UNESCO Chairs at the University of Ulster and The National University of Ireland, Galway hosted an event to launch a commentary advocating for a referendum on the inclusion of children’s rights in the Irish Constitution. UNESCO Chairs Call for Stronger Childrens Rights Culture in Ireland

Ireland’s two UNESCO Chair holders have come together to launch a joint Commentary on the proposed referendum on the rights of the child in Ireland. The Commentary, ‘Children’s Rights and the Family’, forms a major part of the work of the Children and Youth Programme, and we hope that it will provide an independent academic research basis for the forthcoming debate.
