I began to research the strengths and weaknesses of the current microchip that is inserted into our pets to see how they could be improved. It contains many pros such as it being injected into your pet so it cannot be tampered with and so your information can be safe at all time. They also have the same average lifespan as your pet meaning it is a one time procedure that is effective their whole lives.

Despite these positives, the negative is clear; lost or stolen dogs cannot be tracked and owners have to rely on the public handing in their pet to the vets to have their microchip scanned, which doesn’t always happen.

The next step of my process was to pin point what exactly the problem is so that I could then find the solution. As a dog owner myself, the problems were fairly easy to detect. Over lockdown the number of dog mappings have risen dramatically where dogs are being stolen in broad daylight and being sold onto be killed or tortured. This is so easily done as the microchip is not a tracker meaning that 98% of criminals are left uncharged.

Once the problems were distinguished, it was easier to be able to create the solutions. GPS trackers in the microchip would save basically all the current problems. if your pet was lost or stolen you could go onto the Find my Pet app and see their location. This means that pets can be found quicker, meaning they will be more likely found safe. GPS tracking would also help police monitor what areas see the most crime, allowing them to know where to patrol more in terms of these crimes. The GPS would also be successful in letting the police see the location of dog theft criminals if they have been stolen as the police will be able to see the pet’s location and therefore hopefully reducing the amount of crime.

I then went on to think about who I needed to consider when creating this product. The two main groups of people the app is targeted towards is of course pet owners and police officers. The app will allow pet owners to locate their pet if it is lost or stolen, whilst also allows police officers to monitor crime and hopefully decrease the amount of animal theft around the world.
