IXD304 Week 7- Narrative Storytelling- Apple Example

This week’s class looked at narrative storytelling. This basically means how a website or app tells a story through their site and makes it much more interesting and immersive for the user, in hope that they will enjoy using their product. A perfect example of this was the Apple website.

When initially on the site, the homepage is welcoming, modern, simple and clean, allowing the brand to really show its products off and make them the primary focus. This works well as the main purpose of their website is to sell and advertise their products.

The whole site’s design definitely has a modern and professional feel to it due to the neutral colours, minimalistic icons and the lightweight sans serif typeface. The design of their homepage has a very effective use of white space that ensures as a customer, your eye is drawn to the product on the image slider. The top menu is comparatively small when you consider their prominence in some other site designs, meaning that Apple make their products the main focus.

The main feature we were looking at that associates with narrative storytelling was the animation throughout the site. EG. As you scroll through the apple watch section,  the watches fade and change colour as well as swap straps etc to show how diverse the collection is, emphasising how there is a perfect Apple Watch for everyone. The motion of the products add some fun to the design and captivates viewers which is what the website is all about.

Apple’s website is so important in selling their products because if your target audience enjoys visiting your site they are more likely to go back there.

I love the style of Apple’s website and hope to include the quick animation throughout my own site in hope to make my site as enjoyable as theirs.

Looking at other successful sites which have created an immersive site like we are currently creating is extremely important as it gives us inspiration on what has already been done and allows your imagination to flow more clearly to create more fun immersive experiences for our own sites.
