IXD303 Week 6- The Design Sprint

What is a Design Sprint?

A Design Sprint is a unique five day process for validating ideas and solving big challenges through prototyping and testing ideas with customers.

  1. Understand. Map out the problem and pick an important area to focus.
  2. Ideate. Sketch out ideas/solutions on paper.
  3. Decide. Make decisions and turn your ideas into a testable product.
  4. Prototype. Put together a realistic prototype.
  5. Test. Get feedback from real live users.

Class Task- the Great Pandemic Design Sprint

The task for our class this week was to go through a quick version of a design sprint during one entire class which is based on the stress on emergency services. We had to go through each step as we would in the real world and come up with a solution to a problem associated with this.

Following the order of the design sprint, we starting brainstorming ideas to familiarise ourselves with the problems that are associated with the emergency services.

We then refined our ideas and created a user journey map and user empathy maps to get a better idea of what we want our product to be and to work out the products strengths and weaknesses associated with it.

Our idea

My group’s idea was to create check-in app for a&e that is reliable, accurate and user friendly for all ages. The app should show you how busy each a&e near you is and what one is better equipped to deal with your injury. this should tale some pressure of emergency services and save time as you will be going to the a&e centre which is best suited for you.

We began sketching our ideas by using the “crazy eights” method which is when you sketch 8 screens in 8 minutes. This helps us to be freer with our ideas and generate more of them.

As well as this, we had to come up with a name for our product as well. this was fun as well all brainstormed together to see what we came up with.

we then took a look art each of our ideas and took strengths from each sheet and put them together to create a stronger idea for our app. this was very beneficial as it helped us to come up with a strong wireframe to present to the class as a group, which we would not have come up with if we all worked on our own.

This task was very interesting and beneficial as it prepared us for the process of what we would be doing in the real working world. It also showed us the importance of sharing ideas and communicating within a team to come up with the best solution for the job.
