IXD301-Week 8- Fathom Placement Talk

Andrew came to talk to us today about a UX placement opportunity at Fathom.

What is Fathom about?

They are a UX Design agency who believe in encouraging performing through insight. They focus on user research to collect the correct data needed in order for them to create the perfect version of their products based on the users needs.

They heavily focus on training which is very beneficial to student UX designers as they get an excellent quality of training through their inside course which is worth £1000. This offers more in-depth training than you would get in other companies.

Now part of Law and Behold which now offers them a bigger platform and more clients which they hadn’t had before.

What is Human Experience Design?

How can we make the design benefit work for the business, people, and the technology?

people- making sure whatever they are doing is beneficial for the people, ranging from the users who will use the app to the people who create the app.

Find the right problem- have to find out what the basic, core problem is to successfully find the perfect solution.

Everything is a system- always think of the big picture, what is the end goal for the users? how can we create this product for the users to get the most out of the product?

Fathom teaches you how to make sure you properly understand what the end goal is before you start the project. “it is better to do the right hing wrong instead of the wrong thing right” This shows that it is okay to make mistakes along the way as long as you understand what you need to do.

 

Through User reseach, Fathom have been able to create very successful apps as they have listened to what the users have said they need EG

  • The visual impared– cannot see as well as the average user- bigger action buttons? adjustable font sizes?
  • The temporarily impared– EG broken bones
  • The situational impared EG new parents, single parents
  • The age impared EG your age hindering your ability to understand how to use new technology

User Testing

Fathom does a lot of User Testing which is very beneficial as they get the public to test their products to see what works and what doesn’t work. Not every company are as focused on user research and user testing as Fathom are and so are not as in touch with their users requirements
