creative entrepreneurship
Core values
- Never done
- Challenge convention
- Impact together
- Bring you
- Advocate
Prior experience
(Make any experience count)
Understand the role
Explain how you understand the role WITH EXAMPLES (VIA YOUR DESIGN PROCESS) EG this is my design process for the role ______
Enthusiasm
Why do you want to work there in the first place?
Willing to learn
- (Use an example) Past mistakes? Problem solving skills?
- Use an example of how you solved a problem or overcame any obstacles etc
- How do you overcome everyday problems?
Aspirations/motivations
What drives you and where do you want to go?
User-centred approach
Part of your process/motivations.
************Very important that your main priority for your work is for the users to improve their everyday lives
In the interview room
Whatever they ask you, tie your answer back to one of the core values explained above, even if it isn’t obvious what the question is asking EG your enthusiasm or user- centred approach
Always answer a question, even if you don’t know how- turn the question into something you do understand- shows the interviewer you can think on your feet- problem solving?
Prepare speaking points, not scripts
Scripts will make you sound unnatural.
Have some good stories or examples in your mind to tell but don’t practice everything you want to say word for word
- Start with a backstory – enough context to explain why the project was important
- Go through your actions – the highlights of what happened, obstacles you faced and how you addressed them
- End with positive outcomes
Sell yourself
- What are your strengths?
- Your strengths should align with the above core values
- Show enthusiasm- why are you the best person for the job? What do you bring to the table?
Use examples to tie back to any claims you make
Companies may set an unseen design task to show that all your work is your own
- Looking for the same thing in your portfolio- not looking to trick you
- Just want to see your design process for an unseen project
- How you approach the problem, USER RESEARCH, design process
- Project final outcome doesn’t need to be amazing, they’re looking at the design process and research.
*Bring hard copies of sketchbooks etc.
Don’t bring them out straight away, will make an impression if they ask about it.
***End in a positive note- leaves a lasting good impression
EG love your design process etc “i think I would be a great fit for your company, I love your work and I would love to work here” shows genuine interest and show you care
Asking questions shows genuine interest
Question examples
- Ask about the work environment- what’s it like, where would you be working etc
- Who would you be working with
- challenges EG could ask about their previous projects etc
