Dr Paul Dunlop and Dr Peter Wilson from Ulster University’s School of Environmental Sciences, in conjunction with colleagues from Geological Survey of Northern Ireland and Mountaineering Ireland, have combined their academic expertise and enthusiasm for mountain landscapes, to compile a stunning new guide – ‘From Rocks to Ridges’.
Funded by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, the guide is a valuable companion for walkers and climbers. It features a geological map with accompanying text and photographs that explore linkages between rocks, soils and landforms. It is intended to aid identification of key landscape features that can be seen in the uplands of the north of Ireland and in other upland areas around the world.
Mountaineering Ireland, the governing body for the sport will be distributing the guide through affiliated clubs and societies to reach their 13,000 members and the general public.
A copy of the guide is also available for download from the Ulster Institutional Repository.

Vitae aims to support the personal, professional and career development of doctoral researchers and research staff in higher education institutions and research institutes.
As well as the blog we mentioned in an earlier post it has a really useful publications section, as well as a Scotland and Northern Ireland hub webpage to keep up to date with regional developments.
The JISC funded SPHERE project is collecting information on the use of the Stormont Parliamentary Papers digital resource – an archive of the House of Commons debates from the Stormont Government, 1921-72. A short web survey on use of the resource is available at the following web link Stormont Papers web survey.
The information collected by the project will be used to understand the needs of the research and teaching community and establish priorities for the digitisation of new content and redevelopment of the user interface. Your contribution to the survey will establish current use of the Stormont Parliamentary Papers resource and help to shape its future development.
Please visit the Stormont Papers web site for further information on the project.
The SPHERE project is funded by JISC, based at King’s College, London and Queen’s University, Belfast, working in Partnership with the Northern Ireland Assembly Library, and the NIA Official Report. It started on Nov 1st, 2010, and concludes in April 2011.
