IxD103 – Week 2 – Monograms

Monograms and Letterforms

During Week 2, we focused on the next stage of our branding project, wordmarks and monograms. These are very important choices as they will visually demonstrate the tone of voice established last week in the writing stage.

This week we were a lot more practical based which I really enjoyed. It broke up the day and meant I found it easier to concentrate on the presentations. We started off with a chat about how we found our work from the previous week. It was useful to see how other people were getting on. We then went our separate ways for an hour to complete a task. This task consisted of writing our name using letterforms made only out of a circle, square and/or triangle.

Daniel asked us to consider what is necessary to make the letters recognisable. He asked us to think could anything be left out and also how to differentiate the letters enough but still maintain a consistency.

Above are the sketches I created along with the rough version on Adobe XD. I like my sketches more than the digital version. I think it is the area which I need to work on the most.

After a presentation on monograms, we had a few hours to go and search for inspiration through photography. I was very lucky to be in my student accommodation in Belfast where the is lots of inspiration around me. I got so many photographs which I went on to edit myself and posted on my Pinterest. Photography is one of my main interests and find it really stimulates ideas for me so this task was very beneficial. You can already see the improvement in my ideas when comparing the ones above to below.

The sketches above are my initial sketches for my monogram. When we get feedback from Daniel I am going to further develop the sketches. I found this to be a very enjoyable week and along with inspiration from Pinterest, some great designers and my own photography, I will definitely be able to come up with a concept, that fits the tone of voice I discussed last week.
